The fall foliage is just about peak. As I look out the window this morning I can see a wonderful array of yellows, reds, pinks, and some green still. The river has risen to 4.84 feet and is looking good for the fall foliage floats. At this level it is almost impossible for me to not head out on the water! If all goes well I should make it out this week. Hope to see you on the water!

Autumn Bliss!
October 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment
The weather and the water are perfect for paddling. The water is at 3.81 feet at the gauge in Vandergrift and the weather should be ideal for paddling this weekend. Anyone who hasn’t had a chance to see how beautiful the Kiski is should consider a trip. The leaves are just beginning to turn and I will keep you posted as they approach their peak. Hope to see you on the water!

Sojourn Success!
September 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Thanks to everyone who helped make the F.L.A.G. Fall Sojourn a rousing success. We started the day early in the morning in Apollo, PA. The water was on the low side, but we still made good time to Leechburg. The three hour trip was enough to build some hearty appetites! Josh and Laura at the Addison House had a wonderful pasta buffet ready for when we arrived. The food is always great and the service superb! A short presentation by Laura Hawkins rounded out our one hour break. A big thanks to Bill for watching our boats and we were back in the water. The trip to Schenley was met with questions from power boats on the lower Kiski wondering who we were and where we we were going. A quick rest stop at the Kiski Campsites and we headed out into the Allegheny River. The contrast between the two rivers is amazing! The Allegheny felt like going into the ocean after paddling the Kiski for most of the day. When we finally heard the music playing at the Riverfront Park in Freeport, I think we all felt a sense of relief. Of course when they made the announcement to the crowd that we were pulling in, I noticed we picked up the pace for the last couple hundred yards. What a great day on the rivers and what a showcase for the region!

Family Fun!
August 19, 2009 · 1 Comment
Last night I got to go out on the river from Avonmore to Roaring Run. While the trip only lasted 3 hours it was most fun I’ve had in a long time. Evelyn, myself, my nephew, his girlfriend, and my Dad (who is in his seventies) made the trip. Along the way we found my favorite rope swing and stopped to try it out and swim. The water was perfect! We ate, drank and polished off a bunch of snacks. After we pulled out, we spotted our second Great Blue Heron of the day. We were able to quietly paddle to within 20 yards before it took flight. The highlight of the trip was yet to come. As we passed the point where Roaring Run enters the Kiski we spotted a Bald Eagle! It was resting in a dead snag and took off directly over top of us. What a way to end the trip! Life is better on the river.

Perfect!

That’s the best way to describe the next few days on the river. The temps are going to be in the high 80’s and the water is still up (3.50 feet @ Vandergrift), this is ideal for kayaking or canoeing. I was out on the water on Thursday and the swimming was great! We paddled from the shop the Schenley and ended up visiting with some friends at the Kiski River Campsites. We saw a Blue Heron and an Osprey along with too many to mention ducks, geese and fish of all kinds. I decided to be adventurous and went out into the Allegheny River. It was raging and almost impossible to paddle up. I tried to go around the island down from the dam and was immediately swept out into the main part of the river. Upon seeing an approaching barge I decided it was time to head back into the friendly confines of the Kiski (home sweet home).

Trout Season!
April 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Trout season is finally here! The guys and girls have been stopping in the bait shop all week to get ready. The favorite spots are Buffalo Creek, Cowanshannok, Cherry Run, and Mahoning. Of course my fellow members will be hitting it hard at the Parks Township Sportsmen’s Association. Rumor has it they put some very nice trout in the lake this year! The weather is perfect and the fish should be biting. Hope to see you on the water!

Happy Easter!
April 11, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Happy Easter to all of you from The River’s Edge. Our season has just begun and the bait orders are being filled! It always fun this time of year because the anticipation builds as opening day gets closer. Trout season in Pennsylvania is huge! Some people even go as far as camping out at their favorite honey hole! Hopefully the weather will cooperate and lots of fish will bite. I am looking forward to 4-21-09 when the annual stocking of the Kiski begins! Once again we will be starting at RRWA and ending up in Leechburg. Most of the fish will be over 20″ and will include Palominos, Brook, Brown, and Rainbow Trout. The Parks Township Sportmen’s Association, The Kiski Watershed Association, and my friend Bill Berry will sponsor their 8TH year of stocking the river! Hope to see you on the water!

Signs of Spring
March 27, 2009 · Leave a Comment
A sure sign of Spring is the return of the Robins. Another is the first shipment of BAIT! As the truck was pulling in to The River’s Edge the guys were waiting for their first order of Fatheads and Shiners! As soon as they got to the water they called to say the fish were biting! Tom and Chris caught a Striper and a Walleye. Dennis and Bill were at the Leechburg launch and started reeling in the Smallies. This is a good sign that this is going to be a very good year on the Kiski. Stop in to see what’s bitin’.
